If you are using a Samsung's Android based SmartPhone, then there is a good news for you. You can
leave your USB data cable aside and simply access all your mobile's content via internet browser
like Google Chome, MS Internet Explorer or any other browser.
Kies AIR is an
application developed by Samsung and supports their own SmartPhones. You simply need to download and
install the application on your mobile from Samsung applications site.
If you are not
able to find this application in Samsung app on your mobile, you can head to this site for the direct download of APK file (A set up file for android). The
link also has the install instructions.
Well, I found it pretty handy to share data among various systems connected through a router with
this facility. Technically, an android phone is just like a small computer which can connect to a
router with WiFi.
And if you have ever connected to another laptop on the same network (connected to same router), you
can pretty easily visualize what is happening behind the scenes. So, you can access the mobile
contents from any laptop just by typing the URL of your mobile phone (provided by Kies Air when it
starts) in the following format:
http://LOCAL-IP-ADDRESS-OF-MOBILE:Port Number
Features
You can do lot of things apart from sharing files. The best optio that i found was of sending SMS
from the browser itself. You get to write/type the SMS using your big laptop keyboard if you are the
chatter box. You will never feel the need of a QWERTY keyboard!
FAQs
- Will there be any SMS charges/cost when I use Laptop browser to send the SMS?
Yes. Technically, you are using you are using your mobile itself to send the SMS. The only
difference is that you are accessing your mobile via Kies AIR application. It will certainly use
your mobile network to send out the SMS and hence the same cost would be applicable.
Please note that if you are using any online FREE SMS sending website to send the SMS, then there
would no SMS charges levied by your network provider.

- Kies Air can be used on non-Samsung phones?
Currently, Kies AIR is available for iPhone apart from Samsung phones. Officially, there is no word
from Samsung whether it supports others or not but i feel that it should be able to do so if the
smartPhone is running on Android. I have not tried it though as everybody at my home owns Samsung :)
There are other apps available in Android app. market which mimic the same functionality for
any (running on Android) smartPhone.
- Can I connect my SmartPhone with my office machine using Kies Air even when USB's are
blocked?
Yes, you can do that as there is no USB connection involved in this case. Everything is happenning
over Wi-Fi.
But, before jumping on to the bandwagon, you need to understand the catch that Kies Air and your
machine should be on the same network. Since, Kies Air needs a Wi-Fi connection to connect to before
making your phone visible to outside world, you may not be actually able to connect to it from your
office machine. The basic reason is that your office's network would not allow your phone to come on
board!
- Is data transfer rate better than USB connection?
No, The USB data transfer is faster than Wi-Fi. If you are trying to transfer heavy data, i would
recommend you to use USB.
