Hosted Adsense For Content Vs Youtube Earnings in Adsense Reports

  16. Nov 2011 by Soan

If you are a YouTube channel partner and have opted for showing up ADS, you are most probably confused about the difference between "Hosted Adsense For Content" and "YouTube" earnings shown on your Adsense reports.

The confusion

When one of our sister site became a YouTube Partner, we got the information that "Hosted Adsense For Content" signifies the YouTube earnings in Adsense reports. This is because, this heading was not visible until we became YouTube partners.
But, at the end of month, when we saw the payments details issued by Google adsense, it had a separate header for YouTube earnings as follows:

Hence, the confusion arised and I looked around for an answer with no success. Some answers on Google forum say that YouTube only publishes revenue data at the end of month but the "Hosted Adsense For Content" shows data on daily basis. What is this data ll about then? I then read through all YouTube help and could figure out the difference between the two. Here is the juice for you to grab.

Difference between "Hosted Adsense For Content" and "Youtube Earnings"

YouTube allows you to run multiple types of ADS on your videos including the inVideo overlay ADS. InVideo ads are transparent overlay ads that appear on the lower portion of your video.

The same ADS can also be run on your videos when they are embedded on sites other than YouTube. For e.g., you may be uploading the video on YouTube and then embedding it on your site too. The same video can be embedded by others too on their own website/blog.
So, when the video runs outside the YouTube site, it shows the same inVideo overlay ADS and are called as Embedded ADS for ease of differentiation.

These embedded ADS are served directly from your Adsense account but the revenue is shared between you (the owner) and youTube only. Google does not get anything from these ADS as is the case with your other Adsense ADS.

The important point to note here is that the amount earned by your from tehse embedded ADS is what is shown as "Hosted Adsense For Content" in your daily Adsense reports.

On the other hand, whatever revenue you earn from the ADS that get displayed on youTube site (Invideo Overlay, InStream video and Banner ADS ) are accumulated and only shown to you at the end of month in the payments details view ONLY.

I hope this would have clarified the confusion. If you still have any questions, please feel free to write up in comments.

Some points to note

"Hosted Adsense For Content" is a term that adsense uses to showcase the adsense earnings from all the sites that have some collaboration with adsense to allow you to post your ADS. For e.g., All the third party sites like YouTube.com, Blogger.com and couple of other sites are counted in this category. If you have set up your adsense account to allow ADS on these third party sites, all the earnings would be summed up under the head "Hosted Adsense For Content".
